Shadows In The Fog

Maps and Images

First, here's a good overview RailwayMap of London

In adding things, please place only links on this page. Give the link a useful name and some sort of description; a blind link is not as helpful.

If you choose to upload an image, please be sure that it will be useful to everyone. If the image is already available on the web and seems stable, please give a link rather than the image itself.

Maps

Booth's Maps of London Poverty -- from the LSE website, fully searchable and cross-indexed against a modern A-Z map. The University of Michigan has the same map laid out a bit differently. Try them both -- they're useful for different things.

Several maps are available at The Victorian Dictionary, and many important buildings and such can also be mapped by clicking on little house-icon buttons.

At the same website, of particular interest is Reynolds' Shilling Map, which Lee Jackson has made searchable through a simple but effective series of interconnected windows. This is a wonderful way to get to know London.

Yet again through The Victorian Dictionary, you should take a look at The Railway Map of Central London, from 1899. It is not terribly detailed, but it is extremely sharp and clear. In addition, it makes clear where the various districts of London are, which is helpful for getting an overview. You can find this map here, at RailwayMap.

At MOTCO, you can examine a fully searchable 1862 map of London and suburbs; if you want, you can even buy the whole thing on CD-ROM, and you can buy single sheet reproductions (some £27.50 apiece, plus shipping).

Images

City of Shadows has scads of photos.

The Victorian Web has lots of photographs of famous places, and scattered images of famous people.

Roger Vaughan's Picture Gallery is nothing but photos, images, and a few paintings. Note that these scans are Vaughan's work, and his images may not be reproduced without his permission.
