Robert Arthur Talbot Gascoyne Cecil, 3d Marquess of Salisbury (1830-1903), PrimeMinister from the ConservativeParty in 1885, 1886-1891, and 1895-1902.
A deeply principled and austere man, Salisbury voted with his conscience at times when it went against his party principles. BenjaminDisraeli once described him as “a madman whose delusion it is to believe himself the one sane person in a world of lunatics,” yet he also called him “the only man of real courage that it has ever been my lot to work with.”
See Schoolnet for a very brief overview. See The Victorian Web for a better, but still short, biography.
