John Poyntz Spencer, fifth earl (1835-1910)

Educated at HarrowSchool^? and Trinity College, CambridgeUniversity^?, he was lord lieutenant of Ireland in 1868-74 and 1882-85; in 1880-82 and 1886, lord president of the council; in 1892-95, first lord of admiralty. Spencer was one of the few WhigParty^? aristocrats who supported WilliamGladstone over HomeRule^? for Ireland in 1886.
