Born Thomas Billis Beach at Colchester, he emigrated to Paris in 1857 and then to the United States in 1861. He fought in the Civil War under a French alias which he retained while working as a spy for the British government from 1866, recruited by RobertAnderson. An important source of information first on the FenianBrotherhood? and later ClanNaGael, returned to England in late 1887 to appear before the SpecialCommission? of 1888.
