Shadows In The Fog

The Editors

There are a small coterie of editors who look over this material and can alter anything, from switching flags to deleting pages. Editorial changes of this sort will normally be marked clearly.

If you are an expert on Victorian material of some sort, preferably with an advanced degree on the subject, and you would like to do some editing, please email the editors. You’re not going to like this, but we need some evidence that you are who you say you are and that you know what you say you know. Anyone can claim to have a PhD in anything, more’s the pity. Please don’t take this amiss: if you really are an academic expert on this material, we’d love to have you. We need all the help we can get, and not all of us have degrees in the right fields.

If you know a lot because you read everything but you don’t have some sort of advanced degree in the field, and you want to help out, please realize that it’s very difficult for us to assess your claims. We suggest that you make a lot of additions and editorial suggestions, and pretty soon we’ll get to know you that way; if you still want to be an editor after we’re convinced you know a hell of a lot, you’re welcome and god bless you.

If all that sounds very elitist, please bear in mind that the game’s author has a PhD—but not in Victorian anything. My degree is in early modern intellectual history and comparative religion. So unlike a professional in the field, I cannot rapidly assess others’ claims and need help where I can get it.

Links

If you would like to direct others to a link, please explain what it is and why it’s useful. Please don’t just look at the front page, think “hey, that looks cool!” and connect it.

Images

Images may be uploaded by following the directions in Wiki Help. Space is not unlimited, however, so please don’t upload anything irrelevant, and try to avoid very large jpgs or the like. If images are too large, the editors will ask you to host them somewhere else or provide a link, and will remove the image itself from the wiki.

Copyright

Please be careful about copyright infringement. If you use anything from the Victorian era, it is by definition out of copyright, so all old photographs, documents, advertisements, texts, maps, and the like are just fine. But do not transcribe modern material without looking carefully at whether what you’re doing is copyright infringement.

If we suspect that something is infringement, we will take it down and ask you for an explanation. Assuming you can convince us that it’s legal, we’ll put it back up, but we have to be careful about this and we don’t retain a lawyer.

Abuse

The Shadows in the Fog Cyclopedia is intended as a resource for players of this game, and also for anyone interested in the creepier byways of Victorian London. We want to keep it open and available. But there’s always the one bad apple who just has to cause trouble.

Four-letter words and other forms of ill-mannered speech may be used, but only with very good historical reason. This is not a bulletin board or a wrestling arena. Directing abuse at other users is abuse of the website. If you do this, you will receive a stern warning from the editors; a repeat performance will get you banned from the site.

Argument with other users should be couched in indirect form: “In his article above, Jones claims that Oscar Wilde died in 1975. Source documents clearly indicate, however, that Wilde’s death occurred on Nov. 30, 1900.” Do not address other writers directly: “No, you’re wrong.” Take that to a BBS forum somewhere.

Spam, including any form of page creation or amendment in order to advertise anything whatsoever, or completely irrelevant to the topic of the wiki, will result in your being blocked without notice. There will be no warnings. If this occurs in error somehow, email the editors and explain. Make it good—I have no sympathy whatsoever for spammers.
