By the late 1880s, the success of the MetropolitanPolice had prompted a restructuring of the CityPolice on similar lines. There were, of course, fewer of each type than in the Met:

• Executive
  • Commissioner -- executive director
  • Receiver (really outside the police) -- financial manager
  • AssistantCommissioner -- senior director
  • ChiefConstable^? -- senior officer in charge of a specific sub-section
• Officers
  • Superintendent^? -- most senior non-executive officer
  • ChiefInspector^? -- most senior detective officer
  • Inspector^? -- if Detective, a senior officer working to the ChiefInspector^?; if not, usually in charge of everything else at a divisional station
  • LocalInspector^?; later DDI or Divisional Detective Inspector -- the senior detective on a divisional station
• Enlisted
  • Sergeant -- essentially NCO's
  • Constable -- "bobbies"
